Back in 1948 two Dallas friends with family roots in the grocery business became intrigued with a new shopping concept. The men were J.R. Bost and Bob Cullum. The new concept was called "supermarkets". Together they bought a small local chain and for the first few years worked nights and weekends to upgrade the selection, quality and overall shopping experience. They made sure that, despite their small size, they could compete against the national chains.
Westlake’s story began in 1905 when W.I. Westlake and his wife purchased the part of the Bagby & Doyle Hardware Company, a hardware store in Huntsville, Missouri. Early pictures show the first Westlake store carrying horse collars, saddles, and wood burning stoves. Their son, F.K. Westlake, would expand Westlake until the name was known throughout the mid-Missouri region. The Westlake stores were the first hardware stores in the region to tear down the traditional long counters separating customers from the merchandise, allowing customers to browse and select their own items.

As the name conveys, Arlington Highlands carries a dual heritage. The "Highlands" refers to a region of Scotland known for its stark beauty and for the stone-hewn character of its people. Highlanders adhere to the ancient values - faith, family, the land, hard work, perseverance, craftsmanship.
The North Texas prairie on which Arlington Highland sits may bear little resemblance to the topography of the Scottish Highlands, but Arlington Highlands carries, in every detail of its conception and construction, many of those enduring Highlands values.
